My Values

by Peter Max Friis Jensen

My Personal Values

Love

Of course.

Liberty

I treasure my freedom very highly and do not like to many commitments.

Empathy

The ability to feel and understand other people is very important to me.

Suspense

A world where tomorrow is known is hell to me. I like the unpredictability of my life. Also I like a little natural kick of adrenaline sometimes.

Honesty

I try to be honest to my self and to others and I treasure honesty from others. It should be said that sometimes life can be more exciting with small lies and to strangers lies can aid my liberty.

Quality

All I do and surround my self with should be quality. This means I aim to make it consistent with my values.

My Political Values

Liberty

Freedom of speech goes without saying. More generally I believe that all liberty that does not affect others negatively should be encouraged. Besides this liberty (e.g. money) can be a motivation factor and can therefore affect the efficiency of the whole society. It is common to think of money when there is talk about efficiency, but I think it is important to consider all criteria (values). We should also remember minorities rights to be different (see tolerance).

Equality

Again equal possibilities for children goes without saying. I believe equality should be interpreted in a much broader way. The equality should also be equality in spite of unequal possibilities. This means that I believe in a large redistribution of means in the society. In most of the world today a mistake or even bad luck has much to extensive effects on the possibilities (Liberty) later. Besides this simple humanism dictates some redistribution. The only argument for inequality should be that efficiency can be affected. Equality also means that we should protect our environment to ensure that we pass on the same wonderfull earth to our children that we recieved from our parents.

Accountability

Both Liberty and Equality should be subject to Accountability. The most effective way of dealing with things like corruption is to induce morals that bans it but the parties should also be accountable for there actions and subject to sanctions. Sanctions should be to limit the guilty party's freedom and should be handled with care. Revenge should never be a part of the motive for a sanction.

Tolerance

Tolerance towards cultures and other ways of doing things should be encouraged. Of course racism is not an option and I look at it as absurd since we are all part of the same homo sapiens race.

Democracy

I have yet to see a better system than representative democracy when it is working (and I do not think one exist) but I can accept that some countries have to mature (morally) before they can have it. The last argument is used too often (in other words) today, but for a few countries it is valid. The criticism should therefore focus on the movement toward or away from democracy. The change in the level of corruption is often a good indicator for this.

Humanism

Humans and there lives is the only thing that is holy to me (I am agnostic). An important point here is that I do not think an unborn baby has much in common with a human being (think about what a human being really is - flesh?). Therefore I think abortion should be legal. Partly because anything else would endanger human lives. The human life starts when a baby is born. Another outcome from humanism is of course that capital punishment is not an option.

Globalism

All political decisions should be thought of in a global context. This is because there exist some significant free-rider problems among states (e.g. enviromental). A solution to the free-rider problem is difficult to find. One solution could be to create one big democracy for all people in the world but I do not think such a thing would have much in common with a real representative democracy. Since this solution is not attractive I think the best way to deal with free-rider problems is creating international morals for states through international organizations and treaties.

My values are not absolute. This means that they can and do change (although I have not changed this page for years). It should also be mentioned that they are not always consistent with each other, but that is exactly what makes them different values. When an inconsistency arise I decide subjectively and form trade-offs. This is of course only an image of whats really going on. Then you can ask what is really going on? and my answer is I do not know.
